Chapter 8
Anne was getting frustrated as she was going through her closet for something to wear. âUGH!â She growled to herself. She started frantically looking through her skirts and pants and still found nothing. She turned around and saw her mom looking over at her leaning on her door frame to her room. Anne got startled from seeing her there looking at her because she didnât see or hear her coming.
âYou okay?â Her mom asked her, looking at her. âWhatâs wrong?â
Anne started moving her clothes in her dresser and closet to her bed trying to find something. âI canât find anything to wear.â She held the darkest colors she could find to her body in front of the mirror. She was disgusted and threw them on the bed. âUgh!â She said sitting on the bed looking at her clothes. âEverything is so âcheerfulâ and âfloweryâ,â Anne just stopped in her tracks looking in the mirror. âLife isnât so cheerful. Itâs actually pretty horrible.â Anne sat back on her bed looking at her mother for support. Her mom recognized Anneâs cry for help and sat down next to her. âYou really think life is so horrible?â
âNo,â she surrendered. âItâs just, I know bad things happen, but for someone to be in the hospital badly beaten and for him to lose his father the same night from some random animal attack seems to be more than what we are seeing,â Anne stopped. âAnd then on top of that, Kaleâ¦â Anne stopped herself again wiping a tear from her eye.
âKale? Honey is something else bothering you?â Anneâs mom asked her.
Anne just shook her head, âI havenât seenâ¦â and then she stopped herself. She went back to her closet to find something to wear.
âSeen what?â Her mom asked.
Anne sat down next to her mom. âNothing mom, I donât even know if itâs my place,â Anne put her head on her momâs shoulders. âDo you have anything in black mom?â
âI have something you can wear,â she offered. She walked up to Anneâs dresser and grabbed a flower. She put it in Anneâs hair. âIn dark times, a flower can be a powerful gesture.â She kissed on the forehead. âCome on, letâs get you ready.â
